What are the benefits of having a website?

The benefits of having a website are endless, but one of the main reasons is that you can get your company or word or information out to not only local people but to a worldwide audience. Not only can it reach out to people in areas that printing can’t, it can also show people your products/ services using imagery or videos on your desktop or even on the go. Another benefit of having a website would be that it is a cheap alternative to printing because things are always changing such as rices products/ services, so on a website these can be easily changed. If you make your website accessible and gain a better relationship with your clients you will not only increase sales but also create customer loyalty through customer satisfaction.

Why is SEO important to businesses?

All major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo have primary search results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with paid search ads. The way this is done is by getting your website url all over the internet so the search engine reads it as a big important website.

What makes an effective / ineffective website?

An effective website would need to be clean, easy to access each part of the website, include contact details, personal to who you are and an all round good design. ineffective websites would include colours that clash, designs that art consistent, had to find places on the website you need and generally somewhere you wouldn’t want to go again.

What are the ways by which we access the web today?

  • Computer
  • Mobile
  • Tablet
  • Tv
  • Xbox/Ps4

All these ways of accessing the internet today makes it easier for businesses to promote there products or services.

What are the strengths / limitations of modern web devices?

The strengths are that you can get information or other services at home, at work, abroad. The limitations that can happen is if the website is down or your phone runs out of data.

Existing Website Designes

  • Apple

The layout for apple is very simple, clean and elegant there navigation is great first if you click on mac it shows all the different computers on a bar across the top, if you click on i phone it has the different ones on the bar again. They have used white grey and black colours and used huge high quality images in the middle of the page which shows they don’t need to over populate there website with junk. If you scroll down it show more images about the product and products that can go with the computer or iPhone with loads more information.

Does this site effectively communicate the business and what it is trying to promote?

This site communicates there products so well because there design looks as good as their products, the reason for this is because of the colours, type, and imagery are always consistent on their products and website link together very well.

What would you change about the site?

I wouldn’t change anything on this site because its navigation is great even for beginners on computers and their design matches there brand.

Is there anything you would consider applying to your own website?

I would like to try the small bar at the top with large high quality images across the middle.

  • Hsbc

Hsbc’s website is very different to apple because they have a highly populated website this is because of all the information that is need to give to customers. Also at the bottom of each page there is the contact and support bar. I think it is easy to access all parts of the website and can be contacted easily if you was stuck.

Graphic Design Agency Websites

  • Design Bridge

There logo

Design Bridge is the logo for a graphic design agency, you can clearly tell this from there logo because they use the word design. One characteristic of there logo is that they look affordable because they are using plain colours, black and white. They have a modern design because of the font they have chosen a sans serif font and used it in bold. I would say this company looks large because of its simple logo. This was made digitally because they have typed out the design bridge. The colours used in this logo are black and white,  This shows a serious company, and they use a white shape to make a bridge which is linked with the name. They have used a sans serif bold font which they have chosen to put a shape going through to create an image of a bridge. The layout of this design is good because they have put the white circle there but you can still easily read the text. This design could influence me because I could find a way to make shapes fit in with my words to link them together.

There Website

Design bridges website is very simple, they do this so there work stands out and talks for its self. I like the font they have used and the way they use quotes on there homepage. They have different parts on there websites which show their work and who they are. i think the website could be better design because its very plain and boring. Although it is easy to navigate around and theres no legibility issues with type and images.

Does this site effectively communicate the business and what it is trying to promote?

I don’t think it communicates the business or its products or services because its not creative or eye catching and if i was the customer then i would choose someone else to create my designs.

What would you change about the site?

The colour to maybe something more creative or the layout, i think this site looks very outdated and should use some contemporary navigation panels to brighten the website up.

Is there anything you would consider applying to your own website?

No i think this website isn’t my idea of design.

  • The One Off

There website is a long horizontal strip which consists of there work there is images of logos, promotional advertising, magazines, leaflets and lots of other creative design outcomes. I like the way they set there work because its easy to navigate through and around the website. The one off’s website mainly shows there work as you can see, they choose to use a layout that brings all there work together with spaces in-between and they keep it as neat as possible all the way through the website, I like this because it shows they are careful and tidy, and take pride in the work that they produce which gives there customers a trust that can only be broke if they don’t follow through with there good work.  This companies website inspires me to try laying my work out in a way that looks tidy. They have made all there work colourful but  the text around the website and the logo are all in black and white which leaves a bigger focus on there work rather than the information.

Does this site effectively communicate the business and what it is trying to promote?

I think this site does communicate that its a design company with the pictures all being design related, although i think there is to many images and quite little information about the images.

What would you change about the site?

I would put less images on or try and create more pages for these images and then explain them a little more because to customers who may know nothing about design it could be confusing.

Is there anything you would consider applying to your own website?

I could try the way they have stacked their images using different shapes and sizes.

  • Evoluted

The way they present there work is very professional and tidy this is because each image used is the same size, they have also left the same space gaps in-between each photo to make it consistent. The work they have do is print and digital marketing which is clear and can be shown through the images they use or the type. Evoluted’s website is set out well because its easy to navigate around the website, on there home page they talk about what graphic design is how they work with graphic design and how long they have been doing it for this gives the customers a great overall view on the company. They also have a big picture as the background which could be some of the work they have done. The services they provide are logo design, leaflets and flyers, brochures, company branding, business stationery and exhibitions, just from reading small parts of the website it was easy to find out what they create. Underneath this they have the option to view there portfolio and the process. One thing i don’t like about this website would be the colour scheme, this is because they use a large image on their home page with a black band across the top but then when you click on other pages they use dark blue colours and light grey backgrounds, This shows not much consistency. This companies website has been laid out different to some of the other websites i have viewed because they have used a large image as there background rather than lots of small images of there work. This could inspire me to use large pictures of my work  rather than lots of small ones. They then present there work in small square boxes which keeps everything in place and makes each piece of work individual.

Does this site effectively communicate the business and what it is trying to promote?

I think this site communicates both the business and its products and services very well because from being on it for 5 minutes i know all i need to know. I think the type is laid out well and very easy to read with no legibility issues.

What would you change about the site?

The colours i would defiantly change, i think i would make the home page much like the other pages.

Is there anything you would consider applying to your own website?

I would lay out my work the same because the gaps in-between each project makes them all individual but still look consistent.

What are the various methods for promoting yourself online?

  • Blogs – Putting your portfolio on various blogs.
  • Social media – creating profiles to showcase your work.
  • Advertise on videos
  • Ask people to share your work or your page

What is the USP of each particular promotion method?

With blogs like word press you can show images, videos and text so this would be a good place to put your portfolio, the same with Behance. Social media is a good place to share your blog url because friends and family can share it to their friends. Advertising on videos is a good way to catch someones eye even if they don’t know it.

What are the limitations / issues?

It can be hard to control your work/education while posting on your sites or blogs and keeping up to date with everything. Also these online blogs and social media site allows people to comment and sometimes if one bad comment is seen it can push people away.

How can they benefit a designer?

These options can also benefit a designer by showcasing their work to possible clients. Its also an easy way to show people rather than carrying printed work around constantly. This also means their will be more than one back up of your work so it cant be lost.
